When Disaster Struck, Lions Stood Together
LCIF Emergency Grant Brings Immediate Relief to 400 Flood-Affected Families in Kathmandu, Nepal
In October 2025, heavy monsoon rainfall caused severe flooding along the Bagmati River, affecting communities in Teku, Kuleshwor and Balkhu, Kathmandu. Floodwaters entered homes, damaging household belongings, clothing, cooking utensils and other essential items. Families were suddenly faced with the loss of basic necessities and an urgent need for assistance.
In response, Lions of District 325 R, Nepal, mobilized immediately with the generous support of a US$15,000 LCIF Emergency Grant (EMR27270-325R). The emergency relief project was implemented from October 13 to November 12, 2025, reaching 400 flood-affected families.
Turning LCIF Support into Action
Four severely affected areas were identified, and Lions organized the procurement, preparation and distribution of comprehensive relief packages.
Each of the 400 families received:
* 25 kg rice
* 2 kg lentils
* 2 litres cooking oil
* 2 kg salt
* 1 blanket
* 1 mattress/sleeping mat
* 1 bucket
* 1 mug
* 1 set of cooking and eating utensils
* 1 bar of soap
* 1 tube of toothpaste
* 1 toothbrush
The relief response therefore addressed not only immediate food needs, but also bedding, cooking, household and hygiene requirements—helping families regain a measure of comfort and dignity following the floods.
40 Lions United in Service
Forty Lions members were directly involved in implementing the project. They worked together in procurement, coordination, preparation and distribution, ensuring that assistance reached affected families efficiently and with dignity.
The project demonstrated the strength of Lions’ ability to mobilize quickly when communities face an emergency.
Making LCIF’s Support Visible
LCIF and Lions Clubs International logos, the District Governor’s logo and Grant No. EMR27270-325R were prominently displayed on banners and relief materials. Lions volunteers wore official Lions service jackets throughout the distribution.
Local government representatives and community members were informed about the continuing humanitarian role of Lions and the vital support provided by LCIF during times of crisis.
LCIF provided the resources. Lions brought those resources to the people. Together, they transformed compassion into action.
Leadership and Partnership
The relief distribution was conducted in the presence of local government representatives and Lions leaders, including Past International Director Er. Sanjay Khetan, Past International Director Balkrishna Burlakoti, LCIF Area Leader and International Director-Elect Rajan Lamsal, together with District leaders and Lions volunteers.
Their participation strengthened coordination between Lions, local stakeholders and the affected community.
More Than Relief—A Message of Hope
For families along the Bagmati River in Kuleshwor and other affected areas, the flood disrupted homes and daily life. The relief package provided essential support while families awaited further assistance and began their recovery.
For them, the assistance meant more than rice, lentils, blankets or household supplies. It meant food for the family, a place to sleep, basic cooking and hygiene necessities—and the reassurance that they were not alone.
The project was designed as a short-term emergency response, providing immediate assistance during the critical period following the disaster.
The Power of LCIF and Lions
The story of EMR27270-325R is a story of partnership: LCIF’s generosity reaching a community through the hands and hearts of Lions, and District 325 R responding when families needed help most.
