Planting for the Future: Leo in Leganes
Breathing life into Leganes’ coast and fortifying it against storms, the Iloilo City Host Leo Club’s LEO WAVE initiative planted 1,000 mangrove seedlings on April 26, 2025, at Leganes Integrated Katunggan EcoPark. This Environment Advocacy team-led effort restored vital coastal habitats and cultivated environmental responsibility.
LEO WAVE (We Advocate and Volunteer for the Environment) aimed to safeguard biodiversity and instill a deeper sense of environmental care among volunteers. The extensive mangrove reforestation along Leganes coastline is a crucial step in ecological preservation.
Planting 1,000 mangrove seedlings offers a resilient natural defense against increasing typhoon impacts. These vital forests act as natural flood control, buffering against storm surges and erosion. Mangrove roots stabilize shorelines, protecting land and communities. They also serve as essential nurseries for marine life, crucial for the ecosystem and local livelihoods, leading to healthier fisheries and a robust marine environment.
The Katunggan EcoPark organization’s invaluable support and expertise were instrumental in LEO WAVE’s success. Their planning guidance and hands-on involvement in seedling planting were crucial. The Iloilo City Host Leo Club deeply appreciates their collaboration and shared environmental commitment.
As a youth-led organization in Iloilo City, Western Visayas, Philippines, the Iloilo City Host Leo Club views environmental advocacy as a fundamental responsibility for the generation inheriting the planet. LEO WAVE highlights their commitment to environmentalism as a core service tenet.
