The Lions Club of Kampala East Transforms Cancer Clinic into Child-Friendly Space
Fostering comfort and providing support for patients and families in Uganda
The Lions Club of Kampala East has supported the pediatric hematology-oncology unit at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, for several years. The cancer clinic is a joint partnership of Texas Children’s Global HOPE® program, Makerere University and the Uganda Ministry of Health.
Last summer, local Lions volunteers helped transform the hospital’s outpatient cancer clinic area into a child-friendly space. They painted the walls cheerful colors, hung beautiful artwork and equipped the area with essential items. In addition to its bright, new look, the clinic offers comfortable chairs and tables, a television and a collection of storybooks and coloring books to support play therapy activities.
The Lions club also provided nutritious food items for the children. In all, the changes help create a warm, welcoming environment that fosters comfort and support for patients and their families during their challenging journeys.
Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has generously supported Texas Children’s Global HOPE programs in Africa for several years. In Uganda, Global HOPE trains local doctors in the highly-specialized care required to treat children with cancer. Since 2016, 31 doctors have graduated from the fellowship program and become leaders in their country’s national and regional hospitals and universities.
The childhood cancer program at Mulago National Referral Hospital is now Uganda’s largest pediatric hematology-oncology center in Africa. It is led by nine specialists who treat approximately 1,000 children each year.
Gifts of volunteer time and funds like those provided by LCIF save lives and make it possible for Texas Children’s to bring life-saving care where there previously was none.
