Retinopathy of Prematurity

HAVE YOU HEARD OF “RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY”?
“Retinopathy of prematurity” is a condition whereby the retina of a premature infant may have been damaged. If not diagnosed and treated immediately, the result could lead to blindness.
Common diagnosis required a physical examination of the retina after the pupils have been dilated with drops – an uncomfortable procedure for babies – and moms!
Through the collaborative efforts of the Lions of Saskatchewan (Multiple District 5) and matching funding from LCIF (US$51,775), a retinal camera was purchased which enables medical staff to capture images of the baby’s eyes which can be used to diagnose a problem and build an appropriate treatment plan. This equipment was purchased for use in the newly-constructed Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
