Restoring Opportunity Through Technology in Sri La
When Cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka, it left a trail of destruction across communities, damaging homes, livelihoods and public infrastructure. Schools were among those affected, with many students suddenly losing access to safe learning environments and essential educational resources.
At Jinaraja Girls’ College in Gampola, the school’s computer laboratory was completely destroyed, bringing digital learning to an abrupt halt. For hundreds of students, access to technology—an increasingly important part of modern education—became impossible.
Today, those students are once again learning in a bright, fully equipped computer laboratory, thanks to the generosity of donors to the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF).
The project was funded through the LCIF Major Catastrophe (MCAT) Grant awarded to Sri Lanka following the devastating Cyclone Ditwah. The grant enabled Lions across the country to support communities as they moved beyond emergency relief and into long-term recovery by rebuilding vital facilities and restoring essential services.
With an investment of more than LKR 3.9 million, the damaged laboratory at Jinaraja Girls’ College was completely renovated and furnished with new computers, desks, chairs and modern information technology equipment. The transformed learning space now provides students with the resources they need to develop digital skills that will support their education and future careers.
The restored laboratory was officially opened on 27 July 2026 in the presence of Lions, school officials, teachers and students. The celebration marked more than the completion of a construction project—it represented renewed hope for a school community that had overcome the challenges brought by one of the country’s most devastating natural disasters.
Education is one of the most powerful tools for building resilient communities. By restoring access to technology, this project is helping students gain the knowledge, confidence and skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world. It is also ensuring that the disruption caused by the disaster does not define the future of the young people who study there.
This initiative is one of several recovery projects made possible through the LCIF MCAT Grant, demonstrating how the Foundation continues to support communities long after the immediate emergency has passed. By investing in education and rebuilding essential infrastructure, LCIF is helping families and communities recover stronger than before.
