Renovating buildings of Uganda School of the Deaf
NAME OF PROJECT: SCHOOL RENOVATION; BY REPAINITING THE DINING HALL AND INSTALLATION OF MISSING GLASSES INTO ITS WINDOWS, REPAIRING THE ROOF STRUCTURES, REPAINTING THE WALLS OF THE DORMITORY SPACES OF UGANDA SCHOOL OF THE DEAF NTINDA- KAMPALA, UGANDA.
Uganda school for the Deaf is the first primary school for the deaf in Uganda. It was established in 1959 by concerned parents under the Uganda Society for the Deaf (USD) located at Namirembe Hill Kampala. The school moved to its current campus on plot 18 Ntinda Road, Nakawa Division Urban Council, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), in 1989. Located, 5 km East of Kampala city. It was fully taken over by government in 2000 as a government grant aided school.
Apparently, the school has a total enrolment of 217 children, 106 are boys and 111 girls, out these, 10 are children with multiple disabilities. The school provides education to deaf and deaf blind children and youth from the ages of 4 to 16 years. Although the school benefits from the Universal Primary Education (UPE) grant, it entirely depends on parent’s contributions and one-time donations from well-wishers.
Repainting of the Dining Hall, inside walls of the Dormitory spaces, started on the 28th of January and this last not more than 12 days. The major works were implemented during the end January Holiday before the children reported back to school. The Leos and Lions who participated who participated in the implementation were over 26. The project was officially closed after installation of project plaques on the 18th March and after evaluation of impact of the work done.
DINING HALL
The dining hall had deteriorated painting and roof sections which were not offering a good environment to the children. These roof sections were replaced new iron sheets and the roof was also repaired accordingly. The roof structure also had structural issues which were solved by installation of hollow pipes in front of the Dining hall. The dining hall block also has the Kitchen and food stores, these were all repainted by the Leos with filling of holes on the building. All the doors and windows of the Dining were all repainted by the Leos and Lions. The windows with missing glasses, broken glasses and all cracked glasses were all replaced with new window glasses.
The windows on the Dining lacked both stoppers and locks which were installed in order to protect the glasses installed from breaking due to wind which may make them hit the frame in case they are not locked or fixed firmly with the stoppers.
The Dormitories of both the boys and girls had deteriorated paint which needed to be replaced. The boys Dormitory had its inside walls painted with colors that do not enhance vision to help the children who have low vision while utilizing the Dormitory. The dark colors were making the usage of the Dormitory very challenging to the children with low Vision.
This was solved by the Leos and Lions of District 411B Uganda who painted the walls of this dormitory with colors that enhance vision. This rhymes with the core service area of Vision as the children now easily utilize the dormitory like others that have normal vision.
In Summary:
The following activities were done:
1. The boys dormitory and dining hall windows and walls got pre-painting minor and holes fill outs
2. The walls were whitewashed and repainted with 2 coats of fresh child friendly colors of silk paint.
3. Both places and plus the girls dormitory were given child friendly pictures and inscriptions of motivational sentences.
4. The leaking iron sheets of the dining hall was refixed with nails
5. Missing glasses were bought and refixed in the windows.
It improved the school learning environment of the pupils through the painting of the Dining Hall. The artistic paintings also will benefit the Children very much as they will engage them to learn new soft skills, be jolly, happy, caring and interact with other people.
