Rebuilding Hope, Restoring Learning

When Cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka, the devastation extended far beyond damaged homes and infrastructure. Schools and learning environments were also affected, disrupting the lives of children and threatening their access to a safe and supportive education.

In response, Lions across the country mobilized relief, restoration and rehabilitation efforts, supported by a Major Catastrophe Grant from Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF).

District 306D11, led by District Governor Rukman Bandaranayake, stepped forward to help Galdeniya Primary School rebuild and restore its learning environment.

The initiative included the renovation of the school’s Home Science Room, helping restore a space where children could continue developing practical life skills. Recognizing the importance of access to technology in today’s learning environment, the Lions also donated a laptop for the use of the students.

Beyond these improvements, the team undertook the essential work of cleaning and rebuilding the school, helping create a more conducive environment for children to return to learning.

This project demonstrates that disaster recovery is not simply about repairing buildings. It is about restoring opportunities, rebuilding confidence and ensuring that children can continue to learn, grow and look forward to a brighter future.

Through the support of LCIF and the commitment of Lions on the ground, District 306D11 is helping turn recovery into renewed hope — one school, one learning space and one child at a time.
