Protect Child Nutrition – A Daily Meal, A Brighter
Overview:
In response to the growing humanitarian need caused by rising malnutrition and food insecurity among children, the Lions of Multiple District 306, Sri Lanka, launched the Protect Child Nutrition program with support from an LCIF Designated Grant.
The initiative provides a nutritious daily lunch to over 5,000 school children across 52 schools in vulnerable communities. For many of these children, this is their only proper meal of the day.
Challenge Addressed:
A significant percentage of students attend school without having had a proper meal, directly impacting their health, concentration, and school attendance. Food insecurity continues to be a critical issue in Sri Lanka, especially in underprivileged and rural areas.
Project Highlights:
Daily nutrition-focused meals served to 5,000+ children
52 schools across multiple districts benefiting from the program
Increase in school attendance as reported by school principals
Program conducted in collaboration with relevant government departments for maximum transparency and impact
Impact:
Principals and educators across the island report that school attendance has notably increased since the implementation of the meal program. Teachers observe better focus and energy levels among students, which positively affects learning outcomes.
Testimonial:
“This meal program has brought a sense of hope to our school. Parents feel supported, and children are more eager to attend. It’s not just a lunch – it’s a reason to dream.”
– Principal, Rural School in Central Province
Funding and Support:
This project is a true story of LCIF pride and community-driven commitment. The Lions of Sri Lanka raised US$400,000 through the LCIF Designated Fund model, demonstrating their dedication to long-term, sustainable impact.
Quote from Leadership:
“When a child receives a healthy meal every day, it transforms more than just their body — it uplifts their spirit and strengthens their future. We thank LCIF and every Lion who made this mission possible.”
– Mahendra Amarasuriya, International President 2007/2008
Conclusion:
The Protect Child Nutrition project is a shining example of how Lions, empowered by LCIF, are tackling real-life challenges with compassion and action. Every meal served is a step toward a healthier, more educated, and hopeful generation.
