Nourishing Young Minds: A Daily Meal Bringing Hope to Sri Lanka’s Children
For many children, the school day begins with excitement and opportunity. For others, it begins with hunger.
In Sri Lanka, the economic challenges experienced in recent years left many families struggling to provide nutritious meals for their children. As household incomes declined and the cost of food increased, thousands of students arrived at school hungry, making it difficult to concentrate, learn and reach their full potential.
Recognizing that no child should have to choose between education and hunger, Lions in Sri Lanka partnered with the **Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF)** to launch the **Protect Child Nutrition (PCN) Program** in 2023. Supported through a **Designated LCIF Grant**, the initiative provides a nutritious daily meal to thousands of schoolchildren, ensuring they receive the nourishment they need to learn, grow and succeed.
What began as a response to an urgent need has become a program that is transforming lives.
Teachers report that children are more attentive in the classroom, better able to participate in lessons and more engaged throughout the school day. Schools have also seen improved attendance, with many students now attending regularly because they know they will receive a healthy meal each day. For some children, it is the most nutritious meal they receive.
But the program is about far more than food.
Lions have built lasting relationships with the schools they support, working closely with principals, teachers and parents to understand each community’s needs. In many schools, Lions have expanded their support beyond the daily meal by improving learning environments, providing educational resources, upgrading facilities and organizing projects that promote health, wellbeing and child development.
This holistic approach ensures that children receive not only nourishment but also encouragement, care and opportunities to thrive.
The program has also strengthened local communities. Lions clubs work alongside volunteers, school staff and local partners to prepare and deliver meals, creating a shared commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn without the burden of hunger.
The Protect Child Nutrition Program demonstrates how LCIF transforms donor generosity into lasting impact. Through the Designated Grant, Lions have been able to provide consistent support over several years, giving thousands of children the chance to attend school, concentrate on their education and build a brighter future.
A nutritious meal may seem simple, but for a child, it can mean the difference between struggling through the school day and embracing every opportunity to learn.
Every meal served represents hope. Every child reached represents a future strengthened.
Together, LCIF and Lions are proving that by investing in children today, we create healthier communities and brighter tomorrows for generations to come.
