Mineral Lake Lions Club Bridging the Gap
Nestled at the base of Mt. Rainier, the Mineral Lake Lions Club (District 19N) has been a cornerstone of the community for more than 70 years. Known for their stewardship of the 94-site Lions Den Campground, the expansion of their community’s food bank, and their annual fishing derby, the club has once again demonstrated its dedication to the Mineral community through swift action and generosity. In a rural area, without many resources, the Mineral Lake Lions Club fills in the gaps, helping community members meet basic needs, providing opportunities within their own community, and creating connection.
In the past few months, the Mineral Lake Lions Club, once again, stepped up in a big way to help their community, without being asked. On April 30th, an arson fire destroyed a historic wooden trestle on Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, causing nearly $10 million in damage and disrupting the nonprofit railroad’s planned expansion. The incident affected not only the railroad but also the local economy, as the attraction brings more than 80,000 visitors annually to Mineral and surrounding communities. The Mineral Lake Lions sprang into action, launching their own fundraising effort and making sure the Railroad’s staff and volunteers were taken care of, fed, and even had clean laundry.
Mineral Lake Lions have all used their own special skills to assist the railroad. Linda who co-owns and operates L&R Embroidery contributed a gorgeous hand-crafted quilt to incentivize fundraising efforts while Lions chapter treasurer, university professor and career forester, Dick Hopkins and his wife Paula donated countless hours consulting on both emergency forest management and bridge removal safety protocols. Members Steve and Starla have invited representatives from the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad to come and speak to the Lions, organized advocacy efforts and brought much needed food, support and nourishment to railroad staff working through the aftermath.
The Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad team is so grateful to benefit firsthand from the extraordinary generosity and support from Lake Mineral Lions volunteer’s service. I hope you will share this story with others as a shining example of just how vital a Lions chapter is to community.
In deep appreciation,
The Staff and Fans of the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad
