International Lions University Organic Farms-OFILU
International Lions University Public Welfare Organic Farming Park
1. International Lions University
Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest public service organization. Dr. Jung-Yul Choi, International President of Lions Clubs International (2019–2021), launched International Lions University to encourage lifelong learning. Lions members and their families from around the world are welcome to become students of International Lions University.
2. Industry-Academia Center of International Lions University
This center offers the Global E-Trading for Charity platform to help Lions members market their products worldwide. In line with one of the eight global service areas of Lions Clubs International—environmental protection—the center promotes organic farming and eco-friendly practices. It also assists farmers in applying for organic agriculture certification, enabling them to receive incentives and subsidies from the Ministry of Agriculture. The goal is to foster love for the Earth and enhance the health of the people.
3. Features of the Two Farms
1) Lions International University Public Welfare Organic Farming Park – Pingtung Farm Area
This land has not used any pesticides or chemical fertilizers for over 20 years and is fully committed to natural farming. We are grateful to the Industry-Academia Center of International Lions University for assisting with the application for organic certification, which led to receiving rewards and subsidies from the Ministry of Agriculture.
The park is teeming with life and grows a variety of fruits and vegetables including cacao, dragon fruit, bananas, mangoes, sugarcane, miracle fruit, longan, lychee, mulberries, durian, starfruit, pineapple, bamboo shoots, avocados, and golden sweet potatoes. It also contains valuable trees such as juniper, podocarpus, and mahogany.
This farm aligns perfectly with the United Nations’ goals for biodiversity and sustainable development.
2) International Lions University Public Welfare Organic Farming Park – Kaohsiung Farm Area
This area was once an abandoned lychee orchard, overgrown with over 100 tall miscellaneous trees reaching two stories high. The lychee trees had grown even taller and were covered with vines, risking death due to lack of sunlight. Fortunately, a Lions member took over the land and requested help from the Industry-Academia Center.
First, Lions members were gathered for rescue efforts. The wild trees were cut down, followed by the removal of vines from the lychee trees, and finally, the lychee trees were pruned.
Thanks to the care and support of many Lions members, the area has been revitalized, has passed organic certification, and received rewards and subsidies from the Ministry of Agriculture.
The farm primarily grows lychees, and also cultivates pomelos, red guavas, longans, bananas, and newly planted pineapples.
4. Support for Organic Certification Applications
The application process for organic certification requires professionalism, patience, and computer skills.
The Industry-Academia Center has successfully helped both farms obtain organic certification and receive incentives and subsidies from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Once certified, farmers can receive a letter of commendation and an annual subsidy of NT$8,000 per 0.1 hectare from the Ministry.
5. Future Vision
The Industry-Academia Center will invite other public service organizations to join in promoting the Public Welfare Organic Farming Park. It will also formally request the Ministry of Agriculture and agricultural departments of local governments to provide more resources and assistance to farmers interested in organic agriculture. This includes information and training courses on organic farming, as well as support in product processing and marketing.
Academic institutions will be invited to research and develop techniques and information for pest and disease management in organic farming.
Through the collaboration of industry, government,
