Inspiring Confidence Through Blind Soccer

On January 26, 2026, we hosted a lecture and experiential blind soccer program at Osaka Minami School for Special Needs Education for the Visually Impaired, welcoming Mr. Rei Kawamura, a member of the Japan national blind soccer team.

This activity marked the first joint project between Sakai Ryoto Lions Club and its Shirasagi Branch, which was established in February 2025. As the activity was decided on short notice and had not been included in the annual budget, and as the branch was still in its early stages with limited operating funds, we were able to carry out the program with the support of the LCIF DCG.

During the lecture, Mr. Kawamura spoke about his personal experiences, challenges, and journey as an athlete. The children listened attentively, showing great interest and respect for his story.

The experiential session allowed participants to handle an audible ball and take part in shooting practice and mini-game activities. This program provided children with visual impairments an opportunity to experience sports firsthand, while also helping them understand the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and mutual support through blind soccer.

On the day of the event, many children shared comments such as, “It was fun to play soccer,” and “We want you to come again.” Parents also expressed their appreciation, with one remarking, “I have never seen such smiles before.” Through this experience, we were reminded once again of the power of sports to inspire confidence and encourage new steps forward for children.

To ensure continued opportunities for practice after the event, we donated training balls to the school, along with an autographed ball signed by Mr. Kawamura. While this activity was limited to elementary-level students due to scheduling constraints, there were requests to expand the program to junior high and high school students in the future, raising expectations for further development.

In preparation for the event, careful coordination was conducted with Mr. Kawamura’s management team and the school, including thorough safety considerations. As a result, we were able to provide a safe and secure environment for all participants, making this a highly meaningful and successful activity.
