Hita Lions Club Forest
As part of the 70th anniversary of the Lions Club of Japan, two years ago, we planted 500 trees in a local forest. We named the project “Hita Lions Club Forest”.
At that time, we planned to plant more trees the following year to nurture the forest, but the saplings were completely wiped out due to feeding damage by deer.
This year, with guidance from the forest cooperative, 66 participants planted 450 saplings at the same location again with protective materials (shelters).
At the opening ceremony, a teacher who has been involved in forestry for many years and was formerly a teacher at a forestry high school gave a lecture.
Hita is a town that has prospered through the forestry industry. It is one of the leading forestry areas in Japan and has long been a town where forestry has flourished. I am sure that the children who participated in the class were able to learn about the history of their hometown, Hita, and how nurturing forests can benefit our lives in many ways, such as preventing global warming, preserving the land, and recharging water sources, and that they also raised their awareness of the SDGs.
The day of the event was blessed with fine weather. Although it was a simple task to place the saplings, attached trees, and protective materials (shelters) in several locations and plant them by the participants, it was not as easy as it should have been due to the slope and poor footing.
The Lions member in charge of the lowest area moved around from top to bottom, his muscles aching all over, but he was very grateful for the experience of being able to go into the local mountains and work with children to re-create a forest.
We also received a great deal of press coverage in the newspapers and had our tree-planting activities mentioned on Instagram. We believe that many people were able to learn about our activities.
This project was funded by the LCIF DCG for environment and youth development.
We are usually associated with local organizations such as the Soft Tennis Association, Hita Boys and Girls Chorus, Boys Soccer, and Boys Judo, and children from these organizations participated in the tree planting.
~ We hope that the saplings will grow up safely and healthily.
