Give Hope. Share Love. Protect Sun Bears.
Lions turning awareness into action at BSBCC — adopting seven rescued sun bears and supporting wildlife conservation in Sabah.
Give Hope. Share Love. Protect Sun Bears.
On 26 November 2025, the Lions Club of Kota Kinabalu Damai, together with the Lions Club of Sandakan Selingan and Lions Club of Lahad Datu, brought Lions from Inter-Zone Region 6 & 7, Zone 18 & 19 to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Sandakan, Sabah, for a meaningful environmental service project.
What began as an educational visit became a powerful journey of awareness, compassion, and action. Nineteen Lions and friends had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the challenges faced by rescued Bornean sun bears, many of which had suffered from habitat loss, illegal captivity, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. Through guided sharing by the Centre and meaningful engagement with BSBCC founder Dr. Wong Siew Te, participants gained a deeper understanding that protecting wildlife also means protecting forests, ecosystems, and future generations.
Inspired by what they learned, the Lions turned awareness into service. Through the joint support of participating clubs and Lions leaders, RM2,200 was raised to support the BSBCC adoption programme. A total of seven rescued sun bears were adopted, helping to provide care, food, rehabilitation support, veterinary needs, and enrichment activities. Special enrichment gifts were also presented to support the bears’ physical and emotional well-being.
This project created good beyond financial contribution. It strengthened collaboration between Lions clubs and zones, encouraged members to become advocates for wildlife protection, and helped spread public awareness through social media and community sharing. Most importantly, it reminded us that every act of service, no matter how small, can bring healing, hope, and a second chance to lives in need.
Through this project, Lions showed that environmental service is compassion in action. Together, we served the forest. Together, we protected life. Together, we gave hope to the Bornean sun bears.
