Serving soup to fight hunger: College Lions to resume Empty Bowls fundraiser
SUGAR GROVE, Ill., April 5, 2022–Waubonsee Community College’s Lions Club will cosponsor an Empty Bowls fundraiser to fight hunger on Wednesday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The public is invited. The event will be held in the Student Center lobby on the campus on Rt. 47 at Waubonsee Drive in Sugar Grove. Proceeds will benefit Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry in Aurora and WCC’s campus-based mobile pantry.
Cosponsors are WCC Lions Club, WCC Ceramics Club and Student Life office. Empty Bowls was suspended in 2021 and 2020 due to the pandemic.
Volunteers will serve bowls of homemade soup and toppings for a $5 donation from students and a $15 donation from others. Soups will be served in bowls handcrafted by Ceramics Club students.
Soups scheduled include black bean, pozole, chicken vegetable, white chicken chili, Mexican chili and loaded baked potato. Gluten-free chicken pozole and vegan black bean are included.
A presentation on food insecurity is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. in the Student Center café. Representatives from Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry in Aurora and WCC’s CARES committee will speak on community food needs and how the public can get involved.
Used eyeglasses will be accepted by WCC Lions for recycling by Lions of Illinois Foundation.
Laura Ortiz, WCC Lions Club president and dean for faculty development and engagement said, “This is an effort to teach about food insecurity in our community and raise funds to ensure everyone has a full bowl.”
