Charity Project – Yeka Terrara Elementary School
Our club, Addis Ababa Greater Lions Club, reactivated the extension of the former school children feeding program. It is recalled that about ten years ago, Greater Lions provided lunch to twenty four school children from destitute families for more than a year.
As government took over the feeding program, our club designed and developed a project of empowering mothers of the hungry school kids by providing them with an injera-making machine (mitad). Injera is Ethiopia’s staple food used as an equivalent to bread in other countries. Greater Lions bought five mitads and donated them to the women with some materials necessary to make Injera.
Unfortunately, the project faced a setback due to insufficient electric power capacity at the school, which made it impossible to operate the machines. Upon request from the school administration, our club took on the responsibility to resolve the issue.
We are proud to announce that Addis Ababa Greater Lions Club has fully covered the cost for upgrading the school’s electric power to a higher phase system, at a total cost of ETB 219,812 (ca $US 1800). This vital infrastructure upgrade brings us one step closer to realizing the original vision of the project and continuing our commitment to community service. However, presumably, due to the nearing end of the school year (June, 2025), the school administration seems to strongly wish the postponement of the project to the next school year (September 2025).
