A Lifeline of Hope
In July 2021, amid the lingering shadows of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Legazpi City ‘Host’ Lions Club, PMJF, launched a bold and compassionate initiative aimed at addressing one of the most pressing yet often overlooked public health concerns—diabetes. With its quiet but devastating impact, diabetes had long posed a threat to the health and livelihoods of countless individuals, particularly those in low-income communities with limited access to consistent medical care and life-sustaining medications.
During a regular club meeting in early June 2021, the idea was proposed. “What if we run a month-long medical mission just for diabetes? We provide not just consultations but also medicines?” The idea was met with immediate approval from the officers headed by the club’s president, Lion Paulin Imperial-Dy, PMJF, and members. By the end of that week, plans were underway.
Thus was born the Diabetes Medical Mission, a continuing service campaign rooted in the Club’s core values of humanitarian service, community upliftment, and public health advocacy. What began as 1 one-month pilot on July 31, 2021, a project to provide free medical checkups and one-month supplies of antidiabetic medicines has since evolved into a transformative, ongoing lifeline, bringing relief and empowerment to residents of Brgy. Libod, Camalig, Albay.
The mission didn’t end in July 2021. The success encouraged the Club to make it a regular program. They decided to hold monthly diabetes medical missions, provision 1-month medicines, and continue health education efforts. They also started raising funds to provide monthly medicines to the most critical patients. For the community, the mission evolved into more than just a free clinic; it became a symbol of care, compassion, and unity. People started discussing their health more openly. Others began preparing healthier meals—the regular patients of Brgy. Libod formed a diabetic club and promoted a healthy lifestyle.
As of May 2025, the Legazpi City ‘Host Lions Club’s Diabetes Medical Mission remains a beacon of hope and a model of what grassroots, community-focused healthcare can achieve. It serves as a shining example of sustained, adaptive, and compassionate public service. More than just a medical outreach, it has become a vibrant ecosystem of care, rooted in solidarity, volunteerism, and a steadfast belief in health equity.
In every patient stabilized, every family educated, and every community empowered, the mission has proven that even the most complex health challenges can be addressed—not with large hospitals or extensive budgets—but with heart, commitment, and the collective will of people determined to make a difference. As the mission continues to grow, it carries with it the hopes and health of the residents of Brgy Libod and the promise that, as long as there is a need, there will be Lions to answer the call.
For almost four (4) years, our monthly diabetes medical mission has been a labor of love—our SIGNATURE PROJECT bringing care and hope. This is our PRIDE as members of the Lions Club. Together, we’ve turned compassion into action. Roar!
