A Festival of Warmth: Makar Sankranti
A Festival of Warmth: Makar Sankranti Celebrated Through Compassionate Service
Makar Sankranti, also lovingly known as Khichdi, is a festival that symbolizes new beginnings, gratitude, and positive transformation. This auspicious occasion was observed in a deeply meaningful manner when the Lions Clubs of District 321B1 chose to celebrate not merely through rituals, but by extending warmth, care, and human connection to those who needed it most. The festival became a living expression of compassion as blankets and food were distributed to needy people, elderly citizens, and women, helping them face the harsh winter with comfort and dignity.
This heartfelt service initiative was carried out by Lions Club Lucknow Varisha, District 321B1, in association with Varishth Nagrik Kalyan Samity, Keshav Nagar. The programme was organized at the Community Centre near the Keshav Nagar Police Station and commenced from noon onwards. Gradually, the venue transformed into a space of togetherness, where people from different walks of life gathered with a shared purpose to serve, to care, and to celebrate humanity.
Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the sun into a new phase and is traditionally associated with harvest, prosperity, and hope. Reflecting these timeless values, the club members felt that the truest way to honor the festival was by reaching out to the community with empathy. Residents of Keshav Nagar, members of the Varishth Nagrik Kalyan Samity, and local passers-by became part of the programme, creating an atmosphere filled with goodwill, harmony, and mutual respect. Warm conversations, gentle smiles, and moments of quiet gratitude made the occasion emotionally enriching for everyone present.
The service activity was guided with dedication and sensitivity under the leadership of Club Activity Chairperson Lion Dr. Alpana Bajpayee and Secretary PMJF Lion Rehana Hoda. Their thoughtful planning and compassionate approach ensured that the distribution was conducted in an organized, respectful, and dignified manner. Each act of service went beyond material support; it carried reassurance, care, and the strong message that the community stands together in times of need.
The initiative was further inspired and strengthened under the visionary leadership of PMJF Lion Dr. R. C. Mishra, District Governor 321B1, whose guidance consistently encourages clubs to align service activities with the core values of Lionism, compassion, commitment, and community upliftment. His leadership motivates clubs to transform festivals into opportunities for meaningful humanitarian outreach that touch lives at the grassroots level.
The programme also reflected the larger global mission of the Lions Clubs International Foundation, which supports impactful service projects across the world. Through such initiatives, the spirit of LCIF , serving humanity with dignity and sustainability, was clearly visible, reinforcing the idea that small acts of kindness at the local level contribute to a powerful global cause.
Adding further warmth to the celebrations, Lions Club Rudauli joined hands with other clubs of District 321B1. Under the leadership of President Lion Dr. Nehal Raza, along with dedicated members of the club, Makar Sankranti was celebrated by organizing a Khichdi Bhoj. The simple yet nourishing festive meal was served with love and respect, creating a sense of equality, belonging, and shared joy among all present.
In another meaningful expression of service, Lions Club Lucknow Eklavya also celebrated Makar Sankranti by distributing Tahri (cooked rice) among people in need. This initiative ensured that the festive spirit reached those struggling for daily meals, reminding everyone that no celebration is complete until it includes the less fortunate.
For the elderly citizens and women who received meals and care, these gestures symbolised safety, warmth, and emotional support during the winter season.
