Leos

On December 3rd, the Leos of District 108 La (MD 108 ITALY) met in Florence, on the occasion of the days dedicated to the fight against AIDS, with the aim of raising awareness and completing the project “HIV and AIDS: raising awareness and educating young people for a conscious future”.
The aim of the project is to educate and raise awareness among young people on the topic of the HIV and AIDS, allowing adequate information preventing the transmission of this virus.
During the awareness meeting, sponsored by the municipality of Florence, supported by LILA Toscana (Italian League to Fight AIDS) and the Lions District, Dr. Valeria Ales. Not only Leo and Lions members were present but, above all, young people from outside who came to listen for greater awareness.
We remember, in fact, that last December 1st the World Day for the fight against AIDS was held, an anniversary established in 1988 with the aim of raising awareness and informing the population on issues relating to the HIV virus and AIDS.
The project was born in June 2022 when, through the presentation of a project, the Leo 108 La District asked the Lions Club International Foundation for a Grant service regarding this thematic area given the important stereotypes still present today.
The data speak for themselves: in 2020, 1,303 new diagnoses of HIV infection were made, equal to 2.2 new cases per 100,000 residents, a progressively decreasing number but which must above all make us reflect on the important role played by correct information, a which the Leos have decided to contribute.
The initial idea was to talk about the topic without filters and, after examining the various points and objectives to be achieved, the Leos created the meeting and an awareness video in which an adult “Francesca”, a fictitious name, rediscovers a his old letter written when he was young where he talks about AIDS and HIV.
The economic contribution of the Lions Foundation is the opportunity to dream big and have a concrete impact in communities with services such as “HIV and AIDS: raising awareness and educating young people for a conscious future”.
Thanks to the cooperation between Leos, associations, institutions and above all thanks to the Lions Club International Foundation which contributed to the realization of the project, it can be said that union is the primary factor in being able to carry out activities of this kind and, in this case, and that only by raising awareness is possible to break down prejudices.
