Raising Awareness Through Diabetes Screening.
In the heart of Dhaka, where the streets pulse with life and the air is thick with the sounds of traffic, vendors, and everyday struggle — the Leo Club of Dhaka New Diamond brought something different on 6th October 2025: hope through health.
With support from the Lions Club, the Leos launched a free roadside diabetes screening campaign. Their target? The often forgotten — street vendors, rickshaw pullers, beggars, daily laborers, and children who live their lives under the open sky.
Diabetes — the silent killer — doesn’t ask where you live or what you earn. It creeps in slowly, often unnoticed, and for the poor, untreated. The Leos knew this. That’s why they decided to take healthcare directly to the streets.
🌿 The Campaign in Action
Wearing white coats and Leo vests, the team set up a simple but efficient screening booth near a busy intersection. Armed with glucometers, testing strips, clean needles, and educational leaflets, they began screening people one by one.
Over 200 individuals were tested for free.
Volunteers explained symptoms of diabetes in simple language: constant thirst, frequent urination, fatigue.
People were given their sugar levels on the spot, along with advice on diet, lifestyle, and — when needed — a referral to local low-cost clinics.
One elderly rickshaw puller, Haji Karim, tested dangerously high. He said he had been feeling weak for months but assumed it was just age. With tears in his eyes, he thanked the Leo members and said,
“You may have saved my life today. No one ever tested me before.”
Children watched curiously. Women shyly stepped forward. One by one, people began to understand — this was not just a health camp; this was a lifeline.
💬 Education, Not Just Diagnosis
More than just testing, the Leos educated. They explained how a simple change in food, more water, and regular walking could make a difference. They emphasized the importance of early detection — how just one drop of blood could prevent years of suffering.
Volunteers didn’t just leave people with numbers — they left them with knowledge, dignity, and a sense of being seen.
🦁 A Promise from the Leos
As the sun began to set, and the last tests were packed away, one young Leo member stood up and said:
“Healthcare should not be a luxury. It should reach every hand, every home, every street.”
With this campaign, the Leo Club of Dhaka New Diamond proved that you don’t need a hospital to heal — sometimes, a roadside and a caring heart are enough.
