Rebuild lives of a flood-affected people

Since late August, severe flash floods and monsoons have affected nearly 6 million people in Bangladesh. These floods have been described by officials as among the worst climate disasters in recent memory.

One of the worst-affected areas is Mirsharai Upazila in Chattogram District, where hundreds of homes have been destroyed or submerged, forcing many families to abandon their homes. Uttam Kumar Deb, a seasonal farmer, is one of those severely impacted. The floods destroyed his crops, leaving him in debt. His inherited mud house was also completely destroyed, and the only remaining structure, a small shed, is barely standing and could collapse at any moment.

In response to this crisis, the Lions Club of Dhaka Century 97-99 (140057), under District 315A1 of Lions International, assessed the needs of families like Uttam’s and developed a resilient, cost-effective design for rebuilding his home by reusing some of the available materials. The newly constructed house was handed over to Uttam on October 13, 2024, just in time for his family to celebrate their puja festival in their new home.

This post-flood rehabilitation initiative aims to bring hope and stability to Uttam’s family, who were left vulnerable by the disaster. By rebuilding their home, this effort not only provides immediate relief but also strengthens the family’s long-term resilience against future challenges.
